GWEC has launched the Global Wind Energy Memorial Award in honour of its late CEO Steve Sawyer, who passed away last year. The Award reflects Steve’s vision and raison d’être. He was an exceptionally influential leader in civil society, with a distinguished career in Greenpeace, and built GWEC into a leading renewables industry representative during his time as CEO.
It is difficult to say how much Steve meant to many of us, as a leader and visionary, full of facts, generous in sharing expertise and help, sometimes grumpy but always with a sudden smile lighting up his face – it is hard not to imagine him coming around the corner in one conference or another. He is missed by many and this Award is a great tribute to his life and vision.
The Award addresses RE-volutionaries – young leaders in the entire renewables sector, who work at the frontline of the green energy transition. The Award recognizes work in all domains, including R&D, policy development, scaling of solutions, and work with marginalized communities. The regional focus includes emerging markets in in Africa, South East Asia and Latin America; the first price will be awarded in 2020 to a young African leader.
